In recent years, aesthetic enhancements have moved beyond the face, embracing a trend known as Body Botox. From achieving a sleek ‘Barbie neck’ to perfectly angular shoulders, botulinum toxin injections are now being utilised to contour various parts of the body. Could this be the next big thing in non-surgical body sculpting?
For many, working out is a daily ritual. Yet, despite our best efforts, certain muscles can become overly developed or tense, leading to a less desirable appearance. This is where Body Botox comes in. Dr. Lara Devgan, a prominent plastic surgeon in New York, has publicly highlighted how botulinum toxin type A (also known in brands like Dysport and Xeomin) can be used to streamline and relax hyperactive muscles, addressing both aesthetic and minor pain concerns.
The size of the cosmetic botulinum toxin market is estimated to be growing at a compound annual growth rate of 12.4% globally from 2022 to 2030, indicating a rising demand for these innovative treatments. A popular use of ‘Body Botox’ is for the trapezius muscle, commonly referred to as ‘traptox’ or ‘Barbie Botox‘. This treatment involves injecting a small amount of neurotoxin between the neck and shoulders, which helps in both slimming and relaxing the trapezius muscle. According to Dr. Melissa Doft, another New York plastic surgeon, this not only results in a more elongated neck but also improves posture by allowing for a more upright stance.
Interestingly, botulinum toxin treatments can achieve what exercise often cannot: it acts as a quick fix for slimming overworked muscles. Dr. Devgan compares its effect to a “chemical cast,” explaining that it reduces muscle bulk by preventing the usual neural signals that cause muscle contraction. Additionally, botulinum toxin treatments are known for reducing excessive sweating when injected into the skin rather than the muscle.
In the realm of noninvasive body contouring, options like fat freezing, ultrasound skin tightening, and electromagnetic muscle toning are abundant. Yet, the rise of ‘Body Botox’ offers a novel approach to achieving a sculpted physique without surgery. For effective muscle-slimming, a considerable amount of botulinum toxin is necessary, making it a potentially costly procedure. While facial botulinum toxin treatment results can be seen in about two weeks, full body results might take up to eight weeks due to the depth of the injections. However, these results typically last longer in the body—around six months compared to three or four months in the face.
Our Business Manager, Frankie Skellington, shares her thoughts on this topic…
“As a regular client of botulinum toxin treatments and a certified aesthetics practitioner, I am delighted to see its expanding applications beyond pain relief and the treatment of hyperhidrosis. I am a strong advocate for the growing trend of non-surgical body treatments.
I often joke about desiring botulinum toxin injections from head to toe, given the impressive results it delivers. With the advancements we’re witnessing, a future where such comprehensive treatments are feasible might not be far of.”
With the array of noninvasive body contouring treatments available, what impact do you think ‘Body Botox’ will have on the future of aesthetic treatments?
